Window sashes must be checked regularly for mold, mildew and damage. You can avoid the cost of repairs in the future by catching the issues in the early stages, before they get out of hand.

The sash is an interior frame that is able to move upwards and downwards in windows that are open. This article will show you how to perform simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can add a classic look to your home. They are also durable and last for a long time when they are maintained properly. However, they can be damaged or degraded over time because of exposure to the elements and wear and tear. However, sash repair experts can restore your windows back to their original condition and keep them looking fantastic for a longer period of time than replacement windows.

The first step to sash window repairs is addressing weather stripping, which is found on both the sash and frame. It could cause drafts if worn or loose. Start by identifying the brand of window and the date of manufacture for the glass (etched on the glass's corner or on the aluminum spacers between panes). Then, take the sash off and mark its width and height, so you can find the appropriate weather stripping replacement to match.

Then, take it off and set it on a surface so you can access all four sides. If the sash is double-hung, you'll need to take off the weights and their ropes that should have fallen into the pocket that was intended to be in the jamb liner. After removing the sash with the utility knife, remove the weather stripping from the old sash by hand or using the putty blade.

When the sash is clean it is time to replace the parting stops. These are long pieces that split the sashes. Pam prefers to use standard 1/2-inch by 3/4-inch window trimmings from the lumberyard. However, you can also use a scrap piece of wood.

After removing the stopper and cutting it to length after which, apply a thin layer of glazing compound over the bottom of the sash. Smooth the compound using a putty tool, and allow it to dry for at least a day. When it's completely dried, apply a top coat of acrylic latex paint. This will help protect the putty, and give your sash an updated look.

Sash Hardware

Sash Weights

Sash weights consist of heavy lead or iron cylindricals that are contained in a concealed cavity and connected by ropes to the moveable window sash. Depending on the size and shape of your window you might need to install one or two sashweights in order to keep it open.
